7 Tips to Staying on Track When You Feel Like Giving Up

By Patricia Young.

Have you ever felt that you just want to throw in the towel and give up? Mainly when you’ve invested a lot of time, energy, and sometimes, even money, into something that you love, but you’re not seeing the results that you were expecting…I’ve been there myself and I’ve also seen clients, friends and colleagues go through the same frustration.

I know how draining it is, how we can beat ourselves up, how we can go on a downward spiral so fast and easily, and even feel that the Universe is not on our side…all of those feelings are familiar. When we feel desperate, and on the verge of giving up, is when we need to stay with it the most, because just before we approach the big breakthrough,  is when we need to be courageous, believe in ourselves and hold on to our “why” like never before.

Have you ever seen anyone who is very successful that didn’t have the determination to do whatever it takes even when they didn’t feel like it? We tend to feel frustrated and then we want to give up. But what if I told you that this is your Conditioned Self – your ego mind – trying to keep you small? Your ego mind will find any way to not let you grow and change, because the ego doesn’t like change and the unkown. We just need to keep building that new muscle daily, and learn to override our instinct of remaining the same.

The big changes start showing up if we stay with it. We have the ability of creating whatever we want. We are powerful beings!  Our potential for living our greatness is limitless. Even though we might not see it in this moment, it is always there. We just need to trust that it is always available for us, there are no exceptions.

Anything that we nurture and give our loving attention to will flourish. We just need to nurture our dream, our mission and continue our path - believing in ourselves. Knowing that we deserve a beautiful life - filled with meaning, joy, freedom and abundance - is the key to staying with it during those challenging times.

A lack of results, and feeling that we lost momentum comes from an internal struggle. It is a mindset issue. If our thoughts, beliefs and actions are not aligned, we will feel stuck and stagnant. Everything starts to flow again when our thoughts, beliefs and actions are congruent.

Ask yourself these questions: “How willing am I to make this happen?  How bad do I want this? and why?” Notice if you have a foot on the gas and the other one on the break… That energy creates the struggle, because we might think that we want something, but our subconscious beliefs are showing us different results.

So how can we go back into the flow of life, and not obsess with what we think it’s not working for us? Go back to the very basics by following these simple tips that will help you stay on track:

  1. Make sure you’re clear on what you really want to create - then revisit your “Why” and own it.
  2. Take good care of your body and soul –  get a massage, go to a yoga class, eat healthy, drink plenty of water, spend time in nature, indulge in creative and/or artistic projects, take some time to do things that are fun, meditate - to keep yourself present and grounded, pray, exercise, etc.
  3. Trust and believe that you can do it – Believing in yourself is key. Don’t fall into the victim role and start blaming others or your circumstances. We need to take personal responsibility and really understand that if others have been able to achieve success, in whatever you want, you can do it too!
  4. Stay focused and be persistent – Have a plan, and take inspired actions towards your goal. Every day, do something that will bring you closer to what you want, even if it’s a small baby step. Persistence really delivers results.  By taking action you override old emotions that no longer serve you, and you’ll continue to build the muscle of creating new habits.
  5. Practice Gratitude – Have an attitude of gratitude. Appreciate and celebrate the little things and even the small accomplishments. Keep a gratitude journal and keep a log of all your accomplishments.
  6. Stay positive by holding your big vision in your mind at all times, and using it as a compass when you make your decisions. Also, surround yourself by people that are positive and inspire you.
  7. Be open and allow yourself to receive and have what you really want – you deserve a bigger and fuller life!

Ah, such a timely post, Patricia! Thank you for the synchronicity! ~ As a visionary, it is SO important to have a crystal clear vision of where I’m going. Without it, I feel like I’m drifting along in the ocean with no sight of the shore. ~ I appreciate the gentle reminder that it’s the “vision” that needs my focus right now. :-)

I love the idea of practicing gratitude as part of the “flow of life” - and helping us stay on track. I find that entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a race, and not giving up is so hard for many entrepreneurs. I’ve thought about the throwing in the towel more than once. However, when I think about my clients and feel grateful for my gifts, I stay true to my course. =)

“Be open and allow yourself to receive and have what you really want.” Love this! I tend to be really productive but at those moments when I start to miss deadlines or things start to fall through the cracks the genesis is almost always fear. Then I laugh at the resistance and move on. I also find that it’s super important to be surrounded by like-minded people!

Thanks for presenting multiple “steps.” Sometimes I think the biggest obstacle is believing we’ve “tried everything.” Good post.

Patricia: I am pleased that I practice several of these on a regular basis. The one I most need to work on is believing and trusting in my abilities. Thanks for solid tips.

Great insight, Patricia! I think this is why it’s so important to be passionate about what you’re doing… success is not a linear process where things just keep getting better and better straight on up. There are ups and downs even in a very happy, successful, prosperous life. Sometimes when we’re stuck at a plateau or a down moment, we forget that the overall trend is up.

I’m actually experiencing this right now with my weight loss goals. My weight fluctuates up and down from day to day but the overall progress (almost 30 pounds in 6 months) is what really matters.

    Thanks for the tips!

Interesting article! love the ideas/suggestions. I’m “stuck” also; feel like I’m adrift in the ocean, and cant swim (well I cant in reality), but you get my drift…..wasnt meant to be funny…anyway, I’ve thought and thought about what I want - in life, to do with it, how to do it, etc. and have come up with ZERO - nothing!!!! any ideas where to go from here? I follow intuition faithfully, but seems like its left me too, I get nothing, nada, zilch, in any direction I look.

any ideas what the problem is and how to fix? thanks, anyone.
