How to Control your Negative Thoughts?

By Patricia Young

There’s a saying that says “Thoughts can be our best friends or our worst enemies”, and it is so true!  In case you didn’t know, we all have approximately between 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts per day, which means that we have an average of one thought every 1.2 seconds, amazing no?

The most interesting part is that some of those thoughts are the same ones from previous days. This means that we are animals of habit!  Now, consider how many negative thoughts we have a day, out of those thousands of thoughts…Nothing good comes out of it, if we keep repeating to ourselves the same negative thoughts over and over again. This is how thoughts become beliefs.

Negative thinking is a common issue, but it can be changed!  We all know, in theory, what the consequences of focusing on negativity are. It increases our stress, which affects our health, it can affect our relationships and it will, definitely, keep us from seeing opportunities to grow and improve our personal and professional lives.

Our negative thoughts generally generate from a disconnection with the present moment and our genuine self. They are usually based on the habit of dwelling and dragging issues from the past, and fear about the future. We tend to reach into the future to find pain or things that could disturb us, and bring them into the present, even though those things may never happen.

But controlling your negative thinking is possible! The first step, is to be aware that you can be in control. Follow these simple tips and begin to change your thinking patterns:

  1. Try to identify your negative thinking habits, that way you will understand your feelings. By changing your thoughts you change your feelings.
  2. Start keeping track of how many negative thoughts you have during the day.
  3. Try to identify what triggered the negative thoughts.
  4. There is always something positive in every situation, try to look for it and flip the negative into positive.
  5. When you feel overwhelmed by negative thoughts, focus your attention on your breathing, that will bring you to the present moment and will help you slow down your thoughts and all the noise in your head.
