What Limiting Beliefs are Holding You back?

By Patricia Young

It is amazing how we start out with such an open mind when we are kids. Do you remember the feeling that everything was possible? There was, essentially, no fear, we felt so powerful and we could reach far.

But, as we grow up and mature our belief system becomes rigid. Living in a world that makes us believe that we are limited, we usually find ourselves not believing in our greatness and we forget how powerful we were once. Basically, our limits are the limits of our mindset and our beliefs.

The only thing that prevents us from achieving our goals or dreams, getting what we really want, is the excuses we tell ourselves about why we can’t do it.

Limiting beliefs are generalizations from experiences you had in the past. We see them as roadblocks based on our perception of the experience at the time. A belief is usually backed up by an experience.

Being aware of your limiting beliefs is an important step, but it’s not enough to help you move toward your dreams. Try to question the belief and the experience you associated to it. Ask yourself if you can absolutely know this belief is true. You’ll be amazed to realize that once you look at it from that point of view, it doesn’t feel so certain anymore.

This will give you the opportunity to start replacing those limiting beliefs for new ones, turning them to its exact opposite, that will help you get anywhere you want!

Always remember:   Your persistent thoughts will become your reality!   Start re-designing your destiny. Take the steps towards achieving your dreams!

Great post. It can be so hard to shake those limiting beliefs that reside in our minds but once you do the world opens up to you and possibilites are endless. Thanks for sharing!

Our parents and other adults in our early lives more or less pounded that sense of wonder and unlimited thinking. And they did it with the best intentions — they were trying to keep us safe. The thing is, we are adults now (at least chronologically). We can and should examine our beliefs to see if they are valid today. As I like to say, “Don’t believe everything you think.”

So true! We have to comply with so many rules and other people’s fears while growing up (parents, school, etc.) we tend to lose our fearlessness. Here’s to taking it back and exercising those beliefs!

One of my favorite topics! ~ I remember so much changing for me when I went off to college. All of a sudden - SO much was possible! I was no longer under the strict thumb of my parents and felt empowered to make my own choices. ~ That was over 30 years ago and I still remember it as a big turning point in my life! :-)

Yes, I agree that it’s so important to question our beliefs when they’re detrimental. Finding evidence for and against them is also beneficial.

My favorite subject! I remember the moment, when I realized that I was limiting my success and that I was not moving forward in life because of my limiting beliefs. It was hilarious and hard to belief how crazy this was. Thanks for writing about it, it’s the most important aspect in designing a dream life.

Love this blog! It’s amazing how are past can lead us to these limiting beliefs even at the nonconscious level. Those limiting beliefs were learned at some point and new ones can be created that will support us!

I believe one of the big items holding many back is mindset. With the right mindset, everything is possible. Not easy, but a fun and worthwhile journey indeed.
